ABOUT MARINA PACOWSKI

Born in France and based in LA, Marina Pacowski is an award-winning jazz vocalist and concert pianist. A true improvising vocalist, she has performed at The Jazz Bakery and The Lighthouse and was featured in a tribute to Kenny Burrell at Catalina. She received a Jazz Excellence Award at Vitello’s (presented by KJazz’s Rhonda Hamilton) and was a special guest at Catalina for the Salute to Black Legends, honoring Ella Fitzgerald. On piano, she has toured internationally, performing extensively in France, Italy, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium, as well as the US. Composers write virtuosic pieces for her, and she has recorded a piano concerto written for her by Frank Proto, accompanied by Cincinnati Symphony soloists. Her new Summit Records CD “Inner Urge” features a who’s who (Joel Frahm, John Clayton, Roy McCurdy, Josh Nelson, Jon Mayer, and others), and has received rave reviews and worldwide airplay.

REVIEWS

For this, her debut album, it is her amazing vocalising that is featured. To describe the wordless flights of improvisation as mere scatting would be a grave disservice - any horn player would love to have them transcribed for their instrument to the extent that they would probably be projected into the DownBeat polls. In fact they could well do the same for Mam'selle Pacowski - listen to the vocal blast on Donna Lee… The final number, What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life? (qu'est-ce que tu fais le reste de ta vie?) was a question easily answered - I'll be eagerly awaiting her next album and a UK tour.” - Lance Liddle

Bebop Spoken Here

An excellent first record… an exceptional voice and the ability to improvise with the best, this debut from Marina Pacowski enlists some of the most talented players in the country for the 13 memorable jazz tunes.” - Tom Haugen

Take Effect

It is kind of rare when you hear a vocalist who can truly fit into the category of jazz singer. Such a singer is Marina Pacowski. Pacowski has a vocal quality when singing lyrics that is a blend of Blossom Dearie and Billie Holiday. Her scatting is rangy and intelligent. There are not many debut albums by a vocalist that reach the heights of excellence that Marina Pacowski has achieved on this one.” - Joe Lang
